Reporting to the Communications Director for the IL Red Cross region and focusing primarily on supporting the Illinois Red Cross chapters in the Quad Cities, Central Illinois/Peoria/Bloomington, South Central Illinois (Springfield/Decatur/Champaign) and Quincy this position works in close collaboration with the Red Cross lines of service to provide communications support for fundraising, disaster cycle, SAF, biomedical services, and volunteer management staff. This position is a temporary position for approximately 8 weeks.
Responsibilities:
Public Affairs: Pitch media and act as an on-the record spokesperson in central Illinois chapters with local media when appropriate and works with local Executive Directors of the chapters in central Illinois. Participates in the distribution and preparation of press materials.
Leads and supports Disaster Public Affairs activities for the central and southern Illinois chapters.
Execute the social media strategy for the region that reflects the priorities locally. Maintains positive relationships with members of the media across the region and works with executives and other staff to manage media efforts and relationships across multiple media markets in a region.
Produces relevant local content for regional web, blog and social platforms. This is both written and photographic content.
As needed may need to travel to the various chapters in Central and Southern Illinois to cover events and content.
Internal & External Communications skills. In conjunction with Communications Director support executive level internal and external communication initiatives.
In conjunction with Communications Director Prepare and distribute press releases. Write blog and other articles. Strong writing skills desired. (American Red Cross uses AP Style for writing.)

The travel time is local drive travel to chapters - as needed. Position is remote.


The position location is listed as the Peoria chapter, however that is flexible in Central/Southern Illinois as position is remote from home.
